The customary short bio…

I am a researcher with a background in sustainability assessment and water resources management. Originally from Cyprus, I studied Geography and Environmental Science in the UK (Cambridge, Oxford, Surrey) and France (Grenoble). After living in Italy (Rome) for about a year, I moved to Australia to take up a postdoctoral position in the Sustainability Assessment Program at the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (UNSW, Sydney). I am now a Research Fellow at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. My current research interests lie in sustainable food systems/diets and modelling food security.

The more personal stuff…

I am passionate for anything related to food and cuisine, which extends into aspects of environmental sustainability, nutrition, attitudes and cultures related to food production and consumption, and, of course, cooking and the personal enjoyment of sharing food with friends and family.

I am a rock music fanatic. I listen to anything from the 60s onwards but some of my favourite artists/bands are (in no particular order): David Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Ocean Colour Scene, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, Roy Orbison, Cat Stevens. I enjoy singing and playing the guitar and occasionally even make the effort to record something – you can check out some of my covers here. It’s not all quality stuff though, I must also confess my guilty pleasure which is 80s pop/disco stuff – some of those tracks get stuck in my head for weeks.

No sport excites me as much as football (soccer for the Americans or Australians). I closely follow the English Premier League (I support Liverpool for reasons I cannot even remember) as well as other European leagues and major international competitions.

I also enjoy reading (mostly non-fiction and popular science), travelling (particularly to destinations with interesting food), cinema (especially crime films and European films), walks in nature (this includes learning about and experiencing native Australian flora and fauna, particularly parrots).
